Meet Mr. John Burks Sr., another Baltimore Reads' success story...
 

Mr. Burks came to Baltimore Reads and tested into the Kurt Schmoke Reading program where he met Mr. Avery Williams (Master Instructor for reading). He wants to get his GED.

“I felt that this was a good place for me. I was sent by my employer and I thought that it would help me to communicate myself better with employees that I supervise. Things have changed for the better already, but I still have a long way to go.

At this time I do not have the authority that a supervisor would normally have with employees, since I am still learning the writing process.

Mr. Burks says that he loves his teacher and so feels admittedly apprehensive about moving to the next level. He said, “I would like to get him (Mr. Williams) to move to the next level with me.”

Mr. Burks has been employed with the same employer for 16 years. Fortunately, he has the type of employer that believes in the loyalty and dedication that an employee can bring to a company.

Mr. Burks has continued to be just as dedicated to his progress here at Baltimore Reads, and says, “I know that this is a long journey -- I may not be fast-paced; but I am steady and I am not giving up.”
